Her name was Gallina, and ever since she was a chick, she had refused to cluck or peck like other chickens. Instead, Gallina would stomp her feet like hooves, whinny like a horse (or at least try), and even attempt to carry Psy on her back. No one knew how or why this chicken started acting like a horse, but Psy didn’t care. To him, Gallina was the best companion anyone could ask for.
Each morning, the villagers would gather to watch the most unusual parade. Psy would jump onto Gallina’s back, and they would trot—well, more like waddle—through the dirt path as if they were royalty. Psy would wear a tiny straw hat, and Gallina wore a ribbon tied around her neck. Together, they brought laughter and surprise to everyone who saw them.
Children cheered. Tourists took pictures. Even the grumpy old man who never smiled would chuckle when he saw them pass by.
But their bond wasn’t just about fun and games. Psy and Gallina truly cared for each other. When it rained, Psy would hold a leaf over Gallina’s head to keep her dry. And when Psy got sick with a cold one winter, Gallina refused to leave his side, staying with him under a banana leaf roof until he felt better.
One day, however, disaster struck. A fox crept into the village, hungry and quick. Gallina was grazing in the grass when the fox leapt from the bushes. Everyone screamed. But before anyone could react, Psy launched himself through the air, shouting with all his might. He didn’t hesitate for a second. He threw rocks, sticks, even his hat—whatever he could find—to scare off the predator.
With the help of a few villagers, the fox finally ran off, frightened by the commotion. Gallina was safe, though a little shaken. Psy hugged her tightly, and from that day on, their bond became legendary.
The villagers would tell the story again and again: “El mono y su caballo gallina — a monkey and his chicken-horse, the best of friends in the strangest of ways.”
To this day, no one could explain Gallina’s odd behavior or why she thought she was a horse. But maybe, just maybe, it didn’t need an explanation. Some friendships are just too special to be understood.
