Meet Punch-kun, the tiny Japanese macaque whose emotional story has touched hearts around the world. Born at the Ichikawa City Zoo, Punch entered the world like any other newborn. But unlike most baby monkeys, he faced heartbreak almost immediately—he was abandoned by his mother.
For Japanese macaques, a mother’s presence is everything. Babies cling tightly to their mothers’ fur for warmth, protection, and security. Without that constant contact, survival becomes incredibly difficult. Zookeepers knew Punch needed something to hold onto—both physically and emotionally. That’s when they gave him an unexpected source of comfort: a bright orange orangutan plush toy from IKEA.
Punch quickly bonded with the stuffed animal, now lovingly called “Ora-mama.” What began as a substitute for survival soon became his entire world. He wraps his tiny arms around Ora-mama when he sleeps. He drags her along as he explores his enclosure. And when older monkeys play too rough, Punch hides behind his plush companion, peeking out with wide, uncertain eyes.
Visitors at the zoo have watched this tender relationship unfold, many moved to tears by the sight of the small macaque clinging so tightly to his soft guardian. Though Ora-mama isn’t alive, she provides Punch with the security he desperately needs during these crucial early months.
Zookeepers remain hopeful that as Punch grows stronger and more confident, he’ll begin forming bonds with other monkeys in the troop. For now, though, Ora-mama is his safe place—his comfort, his shield, his family.
If you’re rooting for Punch to find friendship and thrive, you’re not alone. His story is a gentle reminder that love and comfort can come from the most unexpected places. 🐒✨
