Slithering through the underbrush, almost invisible among the shadows, came a venomous green snake. Its forked tongue flicked in and out, sensing the warmth of a nearby animal. The snake was a silent predator, patient and precise. It slowly coiled its way up the base of the tree where Cubis slept, its eyes locked on the small, vulnerable body of the baby monkey.
Cubis remained unaware, shifting slightly in his sleep and letting out a soft breath. He had no idea that only feet below him, a threat was approaching with deadly intent.
Luckily, not far away, Cubis’s mother had been gathering fruit. As she returned to the area, her sharp eyes caught a glimpse of something unnatural moving near the tree. She froze, narrowing her gaze—then saw it. The snake.
Without hesitation, she let out a loud, sharp warning cry that echoed through the forest. Other monkeys nearby immediately reacted, scampering to higher branches and calling out in alarm. The sudden noise woke Cubis, who blinked sleepily and sat up, still unaware of what had just almost happened.
The snake, startled by the noise and the quick movements of the surrounding monkeys, paused. It hesitated for just a second too long. The adult monkeys began throwing sticks, shaking branches, and making as much noise as possible. One even dropped a nut directly onto the snake’s back. Startled and now sensing the risk, the snake turned and retreated slowly back into the undergrowth, disappearing once again into the forest floor.
Cubis, now fully awake, clung to his mother tightly. Though he hadn’t seen the snake, he could feel the fear and tension around him. His mother held him close, grooming his fur softly to calm him. The jungle returned to its normal rhythm, but the moment left a lasting impression.
This close encounter was a stark reminder of how quickly things can change in the wild. For Cubis, it was a lesson in the silent dangers that lurk even during the safest moments. And for his mother, it was a testament to her sharp instincts and love.
Nature is beautiful—but it is also unpredictable. What started as a peaceful nap could have ended in tragedy if not for the watchful eye of a protective mother. And so, the story of little Cubis continues—now a little more alert, a little more aware, and forever guarded by the jungle’s silent heroes.
