Weak, frightened, and visibly injured, the baby vervet was quickly taken to a local wildlife rehabilitation center. According to the caregivers, the tiny primate had a swollen leg, a minor head wound, and was suffering from dehydration and shock.
“We weren’t sure if he was going to make it,” said Jane Mbatha, one of the rescuers. “But he had a strong will to live. Even in pain, he clung to my shirt with everything he had.”
Under careful medical supervision, the monkey received fluids, treatment for his wounds, and, most importantly, constant warmth and affection. As the days passed, signs of recovery began to show: brighter eyes, small movements, and finally, playful behavior.
A video of his journey—shared by The Dodo—shows his remarkable transformation. From a limp, frightened bundle to a bouncy, energetic youngster climbing branches and cuddling with his caretakers, the footage has moved viewers around the world.
Today, the baby vervet is thriving and learning social skills from other rescued monkeys. In a few months, caregivers hope he’ll be strong enough to be released back into the wild.
His story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of animals—and the difference compassion can make.
